The Salvation Army really was my salvation as a child. The thrift store in our town sold old ASTOUNDING science fiction magazines for a dime each.
It was there, and in the copies of GALAXY and THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION, that I got my first hunger to draw s-f illustrations, write stories-- escape from my bewildering and painful childhood and home . . .
